April
This rainy month brings us swallows, Forsythia, green Willows, nesting Mallards, baetis tricaudatus, paraleptophlebia adoptiva, Craneflies and some Caddis. On wild trout water it also brings the
late April doldrums.
Water temperatures fluctuate from 46 to 56 degrees.
Successful flies include Sucker Spawn, Honeybugs, Al’s Rat, Blue Winged Olive, Blue Quill, Snowflies, Craneflies, Hares Ears,
Elk Hair Caddis, Ants, Henryville Specials and Adams.
FLOX
When these are blooming, you know Sulphur nymphs are ready to hatch!
MAY
April showers bring May flowers, baetis tricaudatus , p. adoptiva, Mothers Day and the annual arrival of
the Shad in the Delaware River. Mid May will bring ephemerella (the Sulphurs.) Midges will be
present as always and water temperatures will go from 54 degrees to 60 degrees.
We suggest Blue Winged Olives, Pale Evening Duns, Sulphur patterns, Adams,
Ants, Craneflies, Henryvilles, Gold Ribbed Hares Ears, Elk Hair Caddis, Al’s Rats and Brassies.
JUNE
Water temperatures will be in the 60’s. The Sulphurs will kick into high gear around June 9th.
Sulphur duns will appear about 8 pm.
Around 8:30 pm, look for Ephemerrella rotunda spinners over the riffles, there can be millions! Wait for the fish to start feeding on the spinners then fish the feeding lanes below the riffles.
Have Pale Evening patterns in #16.
In the morning many anglers observe Paraleptophlebia mollis and mistake them for tricos. P. mollis are unimportant to the angler.
In the daytime successful flies will be Midge
patterns like Al's Rats and Griffith Gnats, Sulphur Nymphs, Ants, Craneflies, Hares Ears, Elk Hair Caddis and Pheasant Tails. In the evening , Pale Evening Dun, Sulphur patterns and Light Cahills.
Late June can bring the first tricos..
When these are blooming, you know Sulphurs are over.
