The bending of light as it passes through a medium of one optical density into a medium of another optical density.


Refraction causes the trout not to be where you think it is.


Refraction also contributes to Snell’s circle, the trout’s window.

… a phenomenon by which an underwater viewer sees everything above the surface through a cone of light, The area outside Snell's window will either be completely dark or show a reflection of underwater objects…[glare]


The window diameter is double the trout’s depth The higher the fish is in the water column the closer you can get, but the more accurate your cast must be.
