The Shadbush

When amelanchier arborea is prominent in the barren woodlands of early spring, American Shad are at the same latitude in the Delaware River.

This rainy month brings us Swallows, Forsythia, green Willows, nesting Mallards, baetis vagans, paraleptophlebia adoptiva, Craneflies and some Caddis. On wild trout water it also brings the late April doldrums.

Water temperatures fluctuate between 46 and 56 degrees. For detailed information please go to www.flylehigh.com and click the “Eastern Spring Creek Summary.”

Successful flies include Sucker Spawn, Honeybugs, Al’s Rat, Blue Winged Olives, Blue Quills, Snowflies, Craneflies, Hares Ears, Elk Hair Caddis, Ants, Henryville Specials and Adams.
